Research, audit and related activity must meet ethical standards in relation to the safe storage, retention and destruction of research data. Researchers should make themselves familiar with the requirements of the Privacy Act 2020 and the Health Information Privacy Code 2020.
Further information is available at the [Privacy Commissioner's website](http://www.privacy.org.nz/)

The Health New Zealand/Te Whatu Ora [Privacy site](https://hauoraaotearoa.sharepoint.com/sites/Intranet/SitePages/Privacy.aspx?csf=1&web=1&e=AturQq&CID=3856be2e-f0e9-4e1c-a581-4efb49e1fe29) provides further information relating to how data can be access, stored, transferred and disposed. These are applicable to research, ***in addition to*** any special requirements stated in the research contract or approved ethics application (eg requirement to notify the sponsor before destruction of archived study files).

Note: The Privacy StaffNet site is available to Health New Zealand/Te Whatu Ora staff only. External researchers can contact the [Research & Knowledge Centre](mailto:waitemataresearch@tewhatuora.govt.nz) team for further information.

**Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA)**

A PIA may be required for a number of scenarios (for example, when identifiable data is being transferred outside the security of Te Whatu Ora Northern region network (eg to an international registry)). The Waitematā Privacy Group (PSGG) meet regularly and can provide advice ([Privacy.PSGG@waitematadhb.govt.nz](mailto:Privacy.PSGG@waitematadhb.govt.nz)) or you can liaise with the Research & Knowledge Centre team ([waitemataresearch@tewhatuora.govt.nz](mailto:waitemataresearch@tewhatuora.govt.nz)). If a privacy review is recommended for your study, email a brief outline of your project to the national Privacy team [hnzprivacy@tewhatuora.govt.nz](mailto:hnzprivacy@tewhatuora.govt.nz) and a Privacy Advisor will get in touch with you. They will provide you with the tools and guidance to complete any assessments that are required.
