### Background

[Te Whatu Ora - Waitematā DHB policy](http://staffnet/QualityDocs/Quality%20Documentation/O7%20Research/Policies%20%26%20Standard%20Operating%20Procedures/%5BP%5D%20Research%20-%20Interventional%20-%20Observational%20-%20Audit%20Research%20and%20Evaluation%20Nov20.pdf) requires all researches, audits, innovations or related activities to be registered with the Research and Knowledge Centre. Such requirement is needed to:

- ensure staff undertaking such activities are aware of the supports available and so improve the quality and robustness of activity.
- ensure conduct meets ethical standards, including privacy and security of data.
- ensure all activities are being conducted with the relevant clinical and management approvals, including those of ancillary services (e.g. labs, pharmacy, clinical records, information analysts etc).
- facilitate organisational knowledge management.

### How to register

To register, you must complete a [Locality Application Form](https://redcap.link/WaitemataResearchApp) for the following:

- Clinical research/clinical trials
- Observational Research (eg case control or cohort studies, cross-sectional studies, descriptive studies)
- Clinical audit
- Surveys of patients, whānau or staff
- Programme/service evaluations
- Innovative practice/technology evaluations
- Quality Improvement projects that interact with patients or patient information (refer to [Ethical Guidelines for QI](#))
- Literature/systematic reviews
- Allied Health CASP & Nursing portfolio/ PG Cert/Dip/Masters/Doctorate/PhD/ Medical Council or College registration projects that have a research component

You do not typically need Locality Authorisation for the following (but advice is still available):

- Quality Assurance type audits eg. monitoring temperature of fridges, calibrating equipment etc.
- Information System projects unless they have a component that interacts with patients
- Facilities projects unless they have a component that interacts with patients (e.g. survey/interviews)
- Service planning projects, unless they have a research component (e.g. an evaluation, pre/post implementation measures)
