## 2026 Round 2 has closed. 


The Asian/Ethnic Health and International Collaboration (Planning, Funding and Outcomes, Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora) is no longer accepting grant applications for the 2026 Asian and Ethnic Health Research seeding grants. 

The **closing date** for this round was midday, **Tuesday June 30th, 2026**.  

The documents are the **Application form** and **Guidelines**.  

 

 


The principal investigator/s for the Medicine Integration grants must be an employee of Health NZ Northern Region (Te Toka Tumai Auckland, Counties Manukau, Waitematā and Te Tai Tokerau Northland Districts) or of Planning, Funding and Outcomes.

The research must be equity focused and have relevance to mana whenua and other Māori living with in the rohe of Health NZ Northern Region.

Research categories for 2026 are: 

**Category 1. Exploring how Rongoā Māori compares and contrasts with TCM. **The purpose of the Category 1 seeding grant is to clarify the similarities and differences between Rongoā Māori and TCM for better** **understanding of how potentially Rongoā Māori, TCM and Western medicine can work collectively to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders.

**Category 2.** **Exploring the concept of Asian Data Sovereignty Framework and establishing its platform.** The purpose of the Category 2 is to clarify the concept of Asian Data Sovereignty including related legal and policy frameworks in the context of Te Tiriti Waitangi and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare, and develop a platform prototype for Asian Data Sovereignty.

Each category is worth a maximum of $15,000. 

You will need to complete your District’s Pre-Award Approval of Research process or equivalent prior to submitting your application and budget.  


The 2023 Seeding Grants of Integration of Rongoā Māori Practice, TCM and Western Medicine were awarded to these research projects:

***“Scoping research for Rongoā Māori implementation at the Auckland Regional Forensic Psychiatry Services (ARFPS): A Kaupapa Māori research approach.” *** 

Principal investigators: Ruiha Trudie Field, Professor Dr Brian McKenna

***“An exploratory study to compare and contrast the Rongoā Māori Massage and traditional Chinese medicine Tuina.” ***

Principal investigators: Dame R. Naida Glavish, Dr Li Feng (New Zealand College of Chinese Medicine)  
Other investigators: Dr Linda Zhang & Dr Zi Yang (both NZ College of Chinese Medicine)
