### Responsiveness to Māori

Māori have the right to good health, to participation in the health system at all levels, and to high quality health research that contributes positively to hauora Māori. The Waitematā District is committed to addressing inequalities at all levels, including the research environment. Researchers should maximise the degree to which their study can contribute to Māori health outcomes. To identify key issues in planning and conducting research in Aotearoa New Zealand:

1. Read the [Research & Māori](https://neac.health.govt.nz/national-ethical-standards/part-two/3-research-and-maori/) section of the National Ethical Standards for Research & Quality Improvement (2019)
2. In the first instance, seek advice from Māori colleagues within your service/community regarding the responsiveness to Māori of your planned research activity.
3. Clinicians whose research forms part of academic study should seek Māori research advice from within their university faculty.

### Engagement with Māori

Early and meaningful engagement with Māori is critical to enable your research to meet the Treaty of Waitangi obligations, and to ensure quality of outcomes for Māori. Te Puni Kōkiri, Ministry of Māori Development has developed the following resources; [Engagement Framework and Engagement Guidelines](https://www.tpk.govt.nz/en/a-matou-whakaarotau/maori-crown-relations/crown-engagement-with-maori). This [NZMJ article](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32994617/) provides a real world example of engagement.

### Māori Research Review

A Māori research assessment is part of the Health New Zealand/Te Whatu Ora - Waitematā locality process for HDEC approved research. It is a service provided to employees and there is one process for Health New Zealand/Te Whatu Ora - Te Toka Tumai Auckland and Waitematā districts. 

### Tino Rangahau - Māori  Health Centre of Research Excellence

The primary function of Tino Rangahau is to support research capability and capacity. Tino Rangahau is made up of experts in:

- tikanga
- research
- Māori health
- public health
- epidemiology, and
- specific research areas such as cancer
